Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. It can come from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. Whenever we feel some kind of pressure, stress is the way our body’s response to it. Many different situations or life events can cause stress, it is often triggered when we experience something new or unexpected that threatens our sense of self or when we feel we have control over a situation.
Don’t need to worry, we are here to help you find a way out of that situation. Amy Morin, a psychologist, spent two years living on a sailboat. This exercise required her to think about what she really needed to be happy in life. According to Morin, in life, we need space, whether physical, mental, or calendar space. Here are Amy Morin's tips for simplifying life:
1. Tidy Up Your Space
Your environment influences how you feel physically and psychologically. A clean and orderly space has a positive effect on your mental state, making it easier for you to feel more energetic and productive. You can also donate items you don't need. It feels light when you have a few things to take care of.
Get Rid of Bad Mental Habits
Examples of bad mental habits include: thinking about the past and regretting constantly. Clear the mental clutter and don't involve yourself in unnecessary chatter. Replace with healthier thinking habits such as gratitude, compassion, and realistic self-talk or discussions with yourself.
Get Rid of Toxic People
Setting healthy boundaries is important. Learn to say no kindly but assertively. Choose the people around you. Keep in touch with those who move you forward, and goodbye to those who set you back. This makes room for those who truly matter in your life.
Manage Finances Wisely
Create a budget and set clear spending goals. You won't easily get caught up in impulsive shopping behavior which ends up filling your house with things you don't actually need.
Take Control of Your Own Time
Time is a valuable resource. However, without realizing it, our time is often wasted on non-essential things. Friedrich Nietzsche said, “Humans fall into two categories: slaves and free men. Whoever does not have ⅔ of the day to himself is a slave, whoever he is, whether statesman, businessman or scholar.” How we live our lives is our own choice, but what Nietzsche said is true. Remind yourself, there won't necessarily be a tomorrow. This can help us to be more disciplined in scheduling time to do important things and enjoy life's moments, playing with children, chatting deeply with partners or friends, or enjoying the sunset.
